Did we see matter falling directly onto a supermassive black hole?

A relatively nearby active galaxy has revealed glimpses of processes in its innermost core, that gives astronomers new clues about what happens directly next to supermassive black holes, objects that are among the most exotic yet fundamental of our Universe. The data might even show that researchers actually observed matter that was directly falling towards the black hole.
